It happened a few years ago when your teen first started hinting around about getting a drivers license. It is the beginning of a process leading to one of the biggest changes in your life, which is your teen obtaining a drivers license. First off the shock – am I really old enough to have a child who can legally drive a car already? Surely not, as it was only yesterday my child was born! Then the thoughts flood in: drivers ed, a driving school, driving lessons, a car, insurance, and many others.

I had a college philosophy professor require that we keep a personal dictionary. This meant that when we would come across a word we didn’t know, we would write it down and keep our own list of new words. I wish a teacher in jr. high or high school had required this of me as I have continued to fill a journal of new words that I come across. This not only expands vocabulary, but it also gets students in the habit of seeking knowledge for themselves. Plus underneath it all, they are writing. Even if its just copying from a dictionary.

What parent hasn’t wondered if their teenager is a lost cause? Why don’t teenagers like to talk to their parents? Unfortunately, most adolescents do not like to be lectured at or told what to do. Parents tend to bring up their own experiences, making it seem like they have all the answers for their teenagers. Just what teens hate. What teenagers really need is someone to listen to them, someone to help them figure out their own solutions to their problems, without judgement.

As a teacher, I always maintained a website for my students to use. My email was listed and I also placed my campus phone and home phone on the site. Next to the home phone I asked that students not call after 10 PM but other than that I was available. I also maintained a study forum where students could ask questions of each other and me and answers went flying across the internet in this virtual classroom. The ability to contact your teacher is a powerful tool that many students don’t use effectively.

All this will make you feel at ease in the country. Learning Spanish is also possible if you purchase advanced materials like cassettes, videos or magazine subscriptions. You could also join a social or language club.

There is no one Real Writer. There’s you, and me, and that writer over there, and the hundreds of thousands of other writers across the globe. And writing for each of us looks different. For me, writing might look like playing with creative strategies to work through a plot snag. Recently, that took the form of drawing a street map. Is that writing? Yep! Because it got me clearer in what was going on in the story and what I needed to convey.

Lofting a twin-sized bed and using the space underneath as a help me do my essay center can generate the most extra space in a small bedroom. Not every teen will relish the adventure of climbing upward for that «good night’s sleep», so a frank discussion on the pros and cons of this bedding choice is warranted. This also limits bedding choice, not allowing anything that has an extended overhang off the bed.

A Bookstore. Over the past few years, bookstores like Barnes and Noble and Borders and even small local stores have transformed themselves into places that encourage people to «come sit and read.» With the addition of tables and couches, the message is that they want people to stay, and many students have taken the suggestion. Bookstores have many of the same advantages as libraries.

Responsibility: Is your teen taking responsibility for his/her actions? Once s/he takes responsibility for his/her actions (the good and the bad) he/she can start connecting the dots of how certain behaviours produce certain results. Responsibility will teach your teen that s/he has complete control over his/her life. What are your teen’s responsibilities at home?

With computers, writing has become so much easier. Instead of using a ton of note cards, you can create your own filing system on your computer. You can sort them by topic, date written, date looked at, and you can even find them by using one word and doing a search. Some people want to feel the pen to the paper and you can sort using note cards and keeping your own filing system. I am not trying to dissuade you from your best writing method. I am just saying computers can offer an organization structure where you can find things at your fingertips in a moment’s notice. A manual system can also provide this.

Writing skills also depends on the person’s idea on the particular topic he is writing about. He should be very well versed with the topic he is writing on. Research work usually comes as a lot of help and it gives the resultant writing a stronger quality. It is very important for the person to know in and out about the topic he is writing on. This can also make the writing full of his personal views and thoughts about the particular topic.
